Parents in the city, especially those with special needs children, are voicing concern ahead of the new school year.
Most Calgary children will report back to the classroom Thursday, September 1st.
Faced with budget shortfalls in the tens of millions of dollars, both the public and Catholic school boards are reducing staffing levels, either through attrition or by issuing pink slips.
Officials with both boards admit classroom sizes will likely have to be boosted to accommodate increased enrolment numbers.
Lawrence Wong tells The Calgary Herald he’s worried about his 8-year-old son, who has Down Syndrome.
Wong is so fearful about changes in staffing levels he has decided to hire his own speech therapist for his boy.
Teacher union leaders are urging parents upset about the budget cuts to write or call their legislative members and speak out, urging the province to boost education funding.
