Peace Bridge now scheduled to open early in 2012

Calgarians will finally have the opportunity to use the city’s controversial new Peace Bridge early next year.
Faulty welds and other problems, discovered months ago, have been repaired. So now the city says work on the bridge spanning the Bow River from Eau Claire to Sunnyside should be completed by the end of the year.
A city spokesman tells the Calgary Herald, sometime this weekend we should see some of the red structure peaking out of its tent. Right now crews are doing some re-painting where repair work was being done and installing windows on the bridge.
Already controversial because of its hefty price tag, the project’s reputation has further suffered because of construction delays and not meeting building standards.
The $25 million budget for the Peace Bridge has yet to exceeded. But in lieu of the problems and delays, there’s speculation that the construction company will be asking for more money, a matter that would have to get approval from City Council.
