Possible transit fare hike on the way

Calgary Transit’s inability to cover costs is proof a fare hike is required, according to a city alderman.

City council referred the matter to the finance committee Monday, but according to Gord Lowe, a $0.25 hike to $3 would help bridge the financial gap.

The Calgary Sun reports the city has mandated 55 per cent of transit’s costs be covered by fares and other fees.

According to a transit spokesperson, that’s only possible by raising fares or slashing discount programs for seniors and low-income residents.

The matter will come before council again next Monday.
