CFIB assesses the PC leadership candidates

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business has released the results of a survey that shows where each of the candidates running for leader of the Progressive Conservative party stands on small business.

The CFIB’s Richard Truscott tells 660News, it’s important that Albertans consider who will help support entrepreneurship in our province when voting for a new premier.

“It was really encouraging to see that all the candidates had a focus on creating a better tax environment for small business,” says Truscott. “Now having said that, there was one candidate — Doug Griffiths — who clearly left the door open to a new provincial sales tax, and that’s something that’s very worrisome for small business, certainly.”

“We think the introduction of a news sales tax — unless it was accompanied by a large reduction in income taxes — would do a major disservice to small business in this province,” Truscott continues.  (Small business) “would be likely responsible for collecting that tax, and” (it) “would do serious damage also to the Alberta Advantage that we’re trying to restore and rebuild.”

Each candidate was asked questions on a variety of issues including taxes, spending, red tape and municipal tax powers.
