World-famous conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall spoke at a Calgary high school Thursday ahead of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival where her documentary, Jane’s Journey, will be shown.
She visited Sir Winston Churchill High School to discuss how young people can actively shape the future through an initiative provided through the Jane Goodall Institute called “Roots and Shoots”.
Dr. Goodall came up with the program two decades ago after encountering young people who were apathetic or depressed about the future.
“Because it’s basically youth-driven and they get to choose and work out what they want to do, it means every child can become very passionate about something they’ve become involved in planning,” says Dr. Goodall. “I think that’s why it’s now spread into over 120 countries.”
Participants take on three initiatives each; one to benefit the environment, one to help animals and one to help mankind.
Over 10,000 Canadians have already made a difference through Roots and Shoots through the over 500 active groups in the country.
