Occupy Calgary organizers claim victory

It’s Day 17 of their protest on St. Patrick’s Island and organizers of Occupy Calgary are hailing the event as a success.

Camp Manager Paul Hughes says the fact they were able to raise awareness about social equality and homelessness is a major victory.

“All of the conversation now is just gravy and I think we should all be taking advantage of it that we can have this prolonged dialogue about some very important social issues,” says Hughes.

He says at any given time 35 to 70 people are occupying the camp.

Hughes says they’ve been cleared by the city to remain on the island until the end of the month.

The community activist hopes they can find some sort of housing for everyone staying on the island by that time.
