Drivers beware: police cracking down on pedestrian offences

City Police are focusing their efforts this month on pedestrian safety.
Constable Jim Lebedeff of the traffic section says the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) for November will concentrate on keeping those on foot, safe.
“Whether it be downtown or in the suburb areas,” Lebedeff tells 660News. “Also in the schools, we’ve had some issues with vehicles not stopping for our school patrols and speeding through the school zones and that type of thing.”
But Lebedeff adds there is also an onus on pedestrians.
“We teach our kids to point, pause and proceed, and look left and look right,” he adds. “I wish people would do that a little more often and have a look to make sure that traffic is stopping for you.”
Lebedeff notes that the time of the year played a role in this month’s enforcement program.
“We’ve rolled back the clock, so it’s a little darker in the mornings now,” he notes. “It’s a little harder to see. We definitely want motorists to please pay attention to pedestrians out there. It’s getting colder in the mornings, so everybody’s in a hustle bustle to get to work or wherever they’re going.”
So far this year in Calgary there have been six pedestrian fatalities.
The fine for failing to yield to a pedestrian is $575 dollars.
