TransAlta fined for manipulating power prices

TransAlta Corp. is facing a $370-thousand fine for manipulating power prices last fall.

It’s said to be the highest penalty in Alberta’s history, but critics say it’s not enough.

The Calgary Herald is reporting the Calgary-based utility admitted to purposely blocking the import of cheaper hydroelectric power from B.C. last November, which resulted in an artificial shortage of electricity.

Sheldon Fulton with the Industrial Power Consumers Association of Alberta says the net effect is that all consumers paid a higher electricity price.
