Statistics Canada says the country’s unemployment rate nudged up one notch last month to 7.4 per cent, from 7.3 per cent, as employment fell for the second straight month.
The number of Canadians who were officially employed dropped by 18,600 in November, following a 54,000 dip in October.
November’s disappointing result makes five consecutive months that Canada has experienced basically a flat labour market.
The services sector and part-time employment took the brunt of the losses with 53,300 job cuts.
That more than off-set the creation of 34,600 full time positions.
Alberta numbers actually improved, as the provincial jobless rate fell from 5.1 per cent to 5.0 per cent, while Calgary’s rate shrunk by 0.2 percentage points to 5.4 per cent.
