A consultant’s report is recommending the city build dozens of skateboard parks in Calgary.
Right now there is a severe shortage of skate board facilities in the city with little development since Skatopia 1 which opened in the Franklin Industrial Park in the 1970’s.
The facility at Shaw Millennium Park opened in 2000. There’s another one at the Westside Recreation Centre, and a modest one in McKenzie Towne as well as some temporary mobile parks.
A City Council committee will hear a report next week recommending that 45 smaller skateboard parks be built, as well as five larger parks about the size of Little League baseball fields.
The cost for the skate boarding facilities is estimated at $11-million, but it’s also being suggested that the parks be put on the city’s culture and recreation budget wish list.
With apologies to Avril Lavigne, according to the Calgary Herald there are about 34,000 sk8ter boi’s and girls in the city.
