Fire destroys Woodbine apartments

Fire has destroyed a Woodbine apartment complex, leaving nearly a dozen people homeless, including at least two children.

Firefighters rushed to the building in the 500 block of Woodridge Terrace SW shortly before midnight Saturday to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof.

Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News the eight-suite, two-storey building is heavily damaged and appears to be a write-off.

Molineaux says eight adults and two children were at the scene of the fire but they’re still trying to confirm if everyone has been accounted for.

He says they’re having a difficult time determining from the property management exactly how many people lived there, especially in the two worst-hit units.   So far, it’s believed all the residents got out okay.

Staff from the Calgary Emergency Management agency worked with displaced residents in the wee hours Sunday morning to find them places to stay.

At last word, fire investigators were on scene trying to determine what started the blaze.
