Winter arrives with a bang

A blast of blowing snow to herald the arrival of winter; Wednesday marks the winter solstice, and the warm spell Calgary’s been basking in has given way to a taste of Alberta winter driving.
Callers to the 660News traffic centre say the QE2 highway is treacherous north of the city. The wind is causing visibility problems and creating compact and icy sections between Airdrie and Red Deer.
In the city, there are some drifts and on/off ramps are icy.
Winter officially arrives when the suns rays are directly over the Tropic of Capricorn at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
660News Meteorologist David Spence is calling for a rather stormy day to wrap up fall as the snow moves south and the sky clears out later in the morning. The wind will also linger through until the evening when winter arrives.
“The new season begins with warm weather; above zero high temperatures return tomorrow lingering through Christmas and beyond,” says Spence. “Christmas Day will be warmest day of the weekend with highs into the mid to high single digits.”
