Attendance record set at world juniors

It’s now official; the World Junior hockey tournament set an attendance record.

Hockey Canada says the eleven day tournament hosted in Edmonton and Calgary attracted just over 571,000 fans to Rexall Place and the Saddledome.

This smashes the previous record by nearly 120,00 set in Ottawa in 2009.

“As a host committee, we truly believe taking games across the province really started the momentum,” said Al Coates, executive director of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship. “This event began with the slogan Alberta United, and the great fans from across the province supported not only Team Canada but all 10 competing countries.”

The average attendance per game was more than 18,000.
