Wind damage forces downtown closures

High winds are getting the blame again for a couple of road closures in the core.; 8th Avenue S.W. between 5th and 7th Streets, as well as 6th Street S.W. at 9th Avenue remain closed until fire crews can secure some loose wire way up on the Husky Building.
The streets were shut-down during Monday’s afternoon rush when the possible hazard was first spotted.
Members of Calgary Fire’s High Angle team continue to wait for daylight in hopes of securing the dangling piece of chicken wire.
High winds and winter weather conditions have delayed the operation until later Tuesday morning.
Department spokesperson Brian McAsey says they wanted to minimize the risk to their members.
“The wind-speed up high is very different than on the ground, and so you can have two-to-three times the wind speeds up at 40-floors than you do at ground level,” points out McAsey.
The plan is to secure the wiring and to see what damage has been done to the sign.
