2012 marks 30th anniversary of Crimestoppers

With the backing of Mayor Naheed Nenshi, January has been proclaimed as Crimestoppers Awareness Month.

Calgarians are being reminded they can report crime anytime by making a simple phone call or through the internet.

“For every day of 2011, Crimestoppers tips were responsible for removing $50,000 worth of illegal drugs off of the streets,” says Terry Hathaway, the Executive Director of Calgary Crimestoppers, commenting on one of the program’s biggest successes.

Last year, tips from the public led to an average of more than two drug charges a day in Calgary, and the removal of close to $2 million worth of illicit drugs from city streets.

“It doesn’t matter how you contact us, whether you call us on the phone, whether you send us an email through our website, or whether you text message us,” Hathaway tells 660News. “You are completely anonymous.  Nobody will ever know who you are.  In fact Crimestoppers doesn’t even know who you are.  And that information gets fed directly to the police.”

Hathaway says not everybody is looking for cash when they pass along tips, but the cash incentive has produced results.

“Since we’ve started the program, we’ve authorized over $1.2 million worth of rewards,” he adds.

The Crimestoppers program is solely supported by charitable and private donations.

660News is a proud supporter of Crimestoppers and airs Crimestopper reports every weekend.
