Canadians stayed on budget during the holidays

It appears many of us avoided racking up too much debt during the holiday season.
A new survey from BMO Bank of Montreal says Canadians spent an average of $1,029, about $300 less than planned.
That same survey also found holiday spending won’t get in the way of meeting financial goals in 2012.
“25 percent of Canadians polled are really focusing on reducing household debt this year,” says BMO Spokesperson Laura Parsons.
“24 percent of Canadians want to save for the ideal retirement lifestyle while 19 percent of us want to reduce spending and increase saving.”
BMO says to help improve our financial health we should track our spending, stay within budget and if you’re not already doing so, set up a savings account with automatic monthly deposits.
The online survey was conducted between December 28, 2011 and January 3, 2012.
