Alberta’s public sector wage bill out of control

A new paper from the School of Public Policy says public sector wages are sapping Alberta’s revenues.
Co-Author Ben Eisen tells 660News, overall the public sector wage bill in the province has increased 119 per cent in the past decade, compared to 63 per cent in the rest of Canada.
The analysis compared salary and wage data released by Statistics Canada for government employees, including health and social institutions, universities and colleges and school boards.
In each category, Alberta’s spending was among the highest in Canada.
Eisen says 95 per cent of the increase in provincial revenues over the past 10 years has gone directly into the pockets of public sector employees.
The spending is being called unsustainable and if the Redford government is looking to reduce it’s red ink, it needs to address it’s employee costs.
