Former MLA beats out former AHS Chair to win PC nomination

There was a surprise result in one of the Progressive Conservative party’s nomination meetings, Saturday, in anticipation of a spring election call.
It happened in Calgary-West where former MLA Shiraz Shariff survived a third-ballot battle with Ken Hughes. Hughes recently stepped down as Chair of Alberta Health Services to seek the nomination.
Speaking to the Calgary Herald, Mount Royal Communications Professor David Taras referred to the victory as “shocking.”
The Tories hope to retain the riding which is currently held by Finance Minister Ron Lieppert who is retiring with the next election call.
In Calgary-Fish Creek, the PC’s have hopes that Wendelin Fraser — a former dean at the Bissett School of Business — will upset current MLA and former Tory Heather Forsyth of the Wildrose.
The Conservatives have similiar hopes in Calgary-McCall. Muhammad Rasheed has won the nomination with an eye towards unseating riding incumbent Darshan Kang of the Alberta Liberals.
In Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre, veteran MLA Ty Lund has retained the party nomination, beating out Jimmy Clark.
