Police target defiant suspended drivers

City police are cracking down on suspended drivers who continue to get behind the wheel.
The project targets repeat offenders with serious convictions like impaired driving or flight from police.
The program has identified 15 suspended drivers who are considered to be the “worst of the worst” offenders; police are targeting about 120 suspended drivers in total
Calgary Police Association President, John Dooks, tells 660News some names were given to police thanks to tips from the public, others are considered to be serious offenders likely to not comply with an order not to drive.
“I think it’s a significant program,” says Dooks. “It goes out to target individuals who, of course, have their driving privileges that have been suspended, either for impaired driving, dangerous driving, or persons who have been evading child support.”
He adds, in some cases police stake out a vehicle they know belongs to a driver with a suspended license and simply wait for the offender to get behind the wheel. In other cases, disqualified drivers are identified during routine traffic stops.
Police also want to make sure suspended drivers don’t get behind the wheel because they are uninsured; in the case of a crash, neither the suspended driver nor their passengers are covered.
