Federal Politicians back in session

MP’s are head back to the House of Commons Monday after a long winter break.
There’s a lot on the agenda over the next five months including a belt tightening budget, a new party leader, and a possible showdown over crime legislation.
The government is looking for cuts between $4-billion and $8-billion; the NDP’s Joe Comartin says from pensions to health care, Canadians will feel the impact.
“For the average Canadian, it’s the reduction in both services available, and certainly the quality of services that are available” says Comartin.
Conservative house leader Peter Van Loan says it’s not about slashing services but rather improving the system.
“What does the Federal Government do? Are we efficient in the services we deliver? Are we getting value for the money that’s spent there?” probes Van Loan.
Also during sitting, the provinces could have a stand-off with the federal government over the cost of the new Omnibus Crime Bill; as well, the New Democratic Party will choose a new leader of the opposition as eight candidates are battling for the job ahead of a March convention in Toronto.
