Late afternoon snowfall causes traffic delays

Mother Nature reminded Calgarians it was winter Monday night, as the snowfall made for a difficult drive in various areas of the city.
EMS say they responded to 26 incidents during rush hour – attributing them to road conditions. City police are reminding motorists to drive “like it’s winter,” – be aware of your suroundings, because they can change quickly.
The snow also caused some delays for a number of bus routes and the C-Train line.
660’s Meteorologist David Spence says some parts of the city will see only 3 cms, but says an average of 5 cm could accumulate by the end of the night.
Meanwhile, Tara Norton-Merrin with City Roads says crews were hard at work in the afternoon spreading anti-icing agents on the roads and salting – to prepare for the storm.
She tells 660News, the temperature dictates how they get ready for a snowy night.
“Anything above minus 10, typically salt works the best. That will provide some traction but, it will also melt the snow and the ice. Anything under minus 10, then we start to move into gravel and pickle, which is a mixture of salt and gravel. “
The snow is expected to melt when the sun rises Tuesday morning.
