Bradley Rietze has changed his plea to guilty on day one of his first-degree murder trial in the death of his stepdaughter.
He dismissed his legal counsel and changed his plea.
Brittney McInnes, 17, was found hidden in a bed in her home Jan. 17, 2010, a day after her mother reported her missing.
Rietze admitted to choking the teen while sexually assaulting her, before wrapping a belt around her neck three times and strangling her.
660News spoke to Brittney’s uncle, Russell Wallace about the guilty plea.
“I think everyone’s kind of in shock today, no one was really expecting this to happen, ” Wallace said. “We’re just still all kind of digesting and talking about it, but with what the family’s been through, I think that everyone’s looking forward to seeing the end of this part of it.”
Wallace said no matter what ends up happening, they will never have Brittney back.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
