Fire at BP Cherry Point Refinery in Washington is out

Fire crews have extinguished a fire that started at around 3:30 p.m. MST at the BP Cherry Point Oil Refinery south of Blaine, Washington, near the Canadian border.

Security at the refinery says no one is believed to be hurt. The refinery has its own fire crews but outside help has been called in.

Flames could be seen shooting 60 feet into the air.

BP’s Cherry Point refinery has provided a significant portion of US energy needs for more than 30 years.

The refinery sits on 2,400 acres and employs about 825 full-time workers. The facility processes more than 225,000 barrels of crude oil daily, mostly transportation fuels.

It provides the majority of jet fuel for Seattle, Portland and Vancouver’s international airports, and is the largest west coast supplier of jet fuel to the U.S. military.
