Positive momentum for labour market

The latest survey by Manpower indicates the Canadian hiring climate should remain upbeat for the second quarter.
In a survey of 1,900 employers, 21 per cent tell Manpower they plan to increase payrolls in the second quarter, while five per cent said they anticipate cutbacks.
Of those surveyed, almost three-quarters of employers said they expect to maintain current staffing levels.
Manpower says the upbeat outlook is driven by the mining industry where efforts are underway in Alberta specifically to develop the largest oil field outside the Middle East.
With Target’s planned expansion into Canada and Wal-Mart’s efforts to compete, Manpower says employers in the wholesale and retail trade sectors also anticipate a strong hiring climate.
Over the past six months, the labour market has been searching for direction, creating on average, less than 3,000 jobs per month.
