E-coli sparks massive ground beef re-call

Possible e-coli contamination has led to a massive nation-wide re-call of ground beef products.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the possibly infected beef was distributed to retail stores, restaurants and institutions such as hospitals across the country.

The CFIA says the beef was produced at what’s being called “Establishment 761” between July 1st and February 15th.

The affected beef may also have a best before date of January 1st, 2012 to February 15, 2013 on the packaging.

At this point there has been one reported illness from the beef and investigators have been working with other health and territorial agencies to determine if any other illnesses are linked to the products.

Food contaminated with e-coli may not look or smell spoiled, but eating it can be serious or potentially life-threatening.

Symptoms will usually start within three to four days after eating the affected beef, but can occur up to ten days later.

They include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, headache and little to no fever.

The CFIA says if they discover that any other products are affected, they will immediately be added to the list.

Affected brands sold in grocery stores so far include Best Value, Calgary Stampede, Country Morning Gold, Exclusive Selections, Grillhouse, Irresistibles, Keg, Licks, Maple Lodge Farms and President’s Choice.
