Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) personnel paid a visit to a Calgary worksite Wednesday investigating possible immigration and refugee violations.
A CBSA spokesperson confirms to CityNews officials were at the site of the new event centre, Scotia Place, at 12 Avenue SE and Stampede Trail at some point in the day.
They say the visit was part of an Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) investigation.
“CBSA officers exercised their designated peace officer authorities by conducting ID checks for the purpose of administering and enforcing the IRPA, namely to identify persons of potential interest for non-compliance,” the CBSA official said in a statement.
Calgary police were also on scene at the request of the CBSA due to the large size of the worksite.
CBSA also says Calgary Police Service (CPS) officers attended as an extra security measure in support of public safety and officer safety.
It adds that the investigation into the matter is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
A person’s border and immigration information is considered personal information and protected under the Privacy Act.
