Braced for the worst

In preparation for a forecast that includes up to 10 centimetres of snow, City Roads had 50 pieces of equipment on the streets Monday morning as well as staff on stand-by.
City Roads spokesperson Tara Norton-Merrin said they were ready for what ever comes.
“We have pucks inserted in the roads throughout Calgary, and we can actually see where those road temperatures are going,” she told 660News. “As long as those stay above zero that really, really helps in our snow clearing operations and also determines what kind of material we’re going to put down.”
The 50 pieces of equipment patrolling city streets is only a start though, as Norton-Merrin noted her department is prepared for the worst.
“We have a lot of experience in dealing with them,” she added. “So there is a plan in place, and as soon as the snow starts accumulating, they’ll double up the forces that are out there right now and get the job done.”
“It looks like it’s more of a mix of snow and rain,” Norton-Merrin continued. “All the roads are wet. We haven’t seen any accumulation but we’re definitely prepared for that. If we get the 10 to 20 centimetres that has been forecasted, then we’ll have all hands on deck.”
As for dealing with the weather, she says it becomes more tricky when the road temperature drops below zero.
