A groundbreaking new facility has opened in the city.
The Calgary Mothers’ Milk Bank is up and running, making it the second of its kind in all of Canada.
The milk bank provides screened and pasteurized human milk to babies when a mother’s own milk is not available.
Mothers who wish to donate are screened through a blood sample, and then submit their excess milk to the bank.
Then, it’s pasteurized and the fat content is balanced out, and then heated to kill any bacteria.
After processing, the milk goes to hospitals to help premature newborns or babies with medical complications.
One of the owners tells Metro, they’ve already had plenty of interest from both donors and hospitals.
