Smith stands behind candidates

Wildrose leader Danielle Smith came out on the defence Friday addressing what she calls attacks on both herself and her party in the wake of comments made earlier this week by one of her party members.

In a weekend interview, Calgary-Greenway candidate Ron Leech said he had an electoral advantage in the riding because he’s Caucasian.

Smith said Leech is a good person who made a statement that was wrong and hurtful to many in that diverse community.  She went on to say if she thought he was a racist, she would have fired him.

She is also standing behind Edmonton Wildrose candidate Allan Hunsperger, who has been criticized for a old blog post where he wrote gays and lesbians would burn in hell.

Smith says his comments are a matter of religious freedom.
