Can a threat be a hate crime?
What about bullying? Or sending an offensive email?
Officials say it’s all of the above and more.
Calgary is among five cities in the province marking ‘Hate Crimes Awareness Day’ (Tuesday.)
Doug Jones with the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee tells 660News parents can be a big factor in action against hate.
“Certainly we have found that those who are typically targetted and those who are responsible for hate are often young people, so we are certainly concerned that young people are educated and understand and value our differences,” says Jones.
He says Calgary police also take an awareness program to city schools to reach out to kids.
