Bowness Park gets multi-million dollar make over

Plans were unveiled Thursday afternoon for the renovation of Bowness Park in the city’s northwest.

The $10.5-million upgrade will happen over the next three years with work already underway on the new park entrance bridge.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he has fond memories of the park and is excited for its make over.

“We are going to have a refurbished area for the lagoon, you’ll be able to touch the water at the river bank, there will be new wading pool where the historical swimming pool was, we are restoring the mini-train which I am very excited about!  And we are putting in some modern amenities like a new concession and better parking,” said Nenshi.

Also on the to do list:

– New central pedestrian area with sitting areas, fire pits and access to lagoon

– Relocation of Parks depot from existing Bowness entrance to Baker Park

– Reconfiguration of road system and centralized parking to improve traffic flow

– Transformation of existing roadways into pedestrian-centred pathways and trails to encourage a pedestrian and cycling-friendly park experience

– New pathway connected to Calgary’s 700 km of existing regional pathways

– Creation of formal trail along river edge

– Riverbank restoration

– Construction of new parking lot adjacent to west end of Baker Park to encourage use of existing boat launch

– Tree removal and planting to encourage healthy, sustainable cottonwood forest

-New water control structures at the lagoon to increase water management efficiencies

– Recreation of orthophonic device for musical enjoyment
