CNRL charged by Alberta Environment

Charges have been laid against a major player in the oilsands for allegedly releasing a substance into the environment.

Alberta Environment alleges Canadian Natural Resources released hydrogen sulfide at its Horizon facility 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray in May of 2010.

“Alberta has strict environmental laws. We believe the law was broken and that’s why charges have been laid,” said Alberta Environment spokesman Trevor Gemmel.

CNRL faces three charges; one for releasing the substance and two others for not reporting it.

If found guilty, the fines could amount to as much as $1.5-million.

The company appears in court in July.
