More water advisories issued and parks closed

The flooding situation in Alberta may get worse in the coming days with more rain in the forecast.

The province is closing some parks and recreation areas including a number of campgrounds in the K-country area as well as the Cougar Creek, Grotto Canyon and Heart Creek Trail systems.

Visitors will not be allowed back into those areas until the risk of flood is over and anyone with reservations will be notified and refunds will be given.

In Calgary, water levels are rising along the Bow and Elbow rivers and Calgary is now included in the high stream-flow advisories that have been issued.

The Glenmore reservoir has been closed, recreational use is banned due to safety concerns and people are being told to stay off the Elbow River because the water is moving dangerously fast and it’s full of debris.

It’s estimated between 30 and 100 millimetres of rain has fallen on the eastern slopes of the Rockies over the past few days, and is now making its way downstream.

Ahead of the weekend, high-water watches have already been issued for Banff, Yoho and Kootenay National parks, resulting in the closure of a number of hiking trails, day use areas, and some camping spots; signs have been posted.

Residents in Okotoks and High River are also keeping a close eye on water levels in the Sheep and Highwood rivers which have flooded before.
