Some residents in the Northeast community of Taradale had to spend Saturday’s lunch hour away from home.
Fire crews evacuated five homes in the 90 block of Tararidge Close after a 13 millimetre gas line was broken during the process of digging post holes.
Battalion Chief Don Huska says the leak posed a number of dangers.
“Not only with the release of gas which can enter a residence and then be ignited by a source of ignition, but gas can also travel down and along the gas line itself underneath the ground and enter buildings that way,” explains Huska.
Residents were allowed to return home after about 45 minutes.
Huska advises residents to call Alberta-One-Call at 1-800-242-3447 before digging to find the location of gas lines.
