Academics and athletics do mix

Who says athletics and academics don’t mix?

The Fraser Institute is out with its annual rankings of Alberta high schools and the National Sport Academy here in Calgary checks in rather impressively at 14th place.

Besides its academic program, the school offers specialized programming in hockey, golf, lacrosse and other sports.

Once again this year private schools dominate the list that often incurs the scorn of educators.

Rundle College and Webber Academy of Calgary share first place in the province with Old Scona of Edmonton.

West Island College of Calgary is rated Number four, followed by Strathcona-Tweedsmuir of Okotoks.

The top ranked Calgary public schools are Winston Churchill and Western Canada, who share 8th place with Springbank High.

St. Francis is highest ranking separate school at Number 45.

The ratings are based on results from last year’s diploma exams as well as other criteria established by the Fraser Institute.
