Canada Day celebrations in Calgary are bigger, better, and more patriotic than ever!
Superintendent for events Trish Neufeld tells 660News the day begins at Prince’s Island Park where you can help make the city’s largest living flag!
“We will be giving red or white t-shirts to 1,000 people and ask them to form a flag in the front of ENMAX stage of which we’ll take a picture,” says Neufeld. “This is a little friendly competition that’s going on between Winnipeg and Victoria.”
Prince’s Island will be the main hub for family entertainment with three stages of entertainment but there are dozens of events happening elsewhere:
River Front Avenue will be closed for activities that celebrate cycling in Calgary.
While in the area, you can also check out live music at Fort Calgary and the East Village.
Speaking of Fort Calgary, some of Canada’s newest citizens couldn’t have a better day for the occasion, as Mayor Naheed Nenshi welcomed new Canadians at a citizenship ceremony.
He said while some tough times will probably lie ahead, one thing is clear.
“What I can say to you, what I can say to you with absolute certainty, because I know it’s true, is that you made the right choice,” he said. “You made the right choice in coming to this great country, to this great province and to this great city, because you’ve come to a place where the community is going to look after you.”
Shirley is visiting from Victoria and said on this Canada Day, she hopes the next year will bring more companionship between different parts of the country.
“I’d like to see us be more united, get rid of the conflict and stuff that we have between Quebec and eastern Canada and western Canada,” she said.
When you get hungry go to Olympic Plaza which will be transformed into Calgary Eats.
“We’re calling it our dining room for Canada Day,” Neufeld said. “You can go and create your own picnic basket, so there will be a farmer’s market area with fresh produce.”
If you can’t make it to the plaza, the food trucks will be scattered at events throughout the city.
Capping off the day, fireworks will be launched off the Centre Street bridge at 10:45 p.m.
