Canada’s Olympic flag bearer named

Canada’s flag bearer for the London 2012 opening ceremony has been chosen; triathlete Simon Whitfield gets the honour.

He won a silver medal in Beijing in 2008, and a gold in the 2000 Sydney games.

The Kingston, Ontario native now lives in British Columbia.

Before the announcement, speculation swirled over who would carry Canada’s flag.

Veteran show jumper Ian Miller and speed skater and cyclist Clara Hughes were both thought to be in the running.

Kayaker Adam van Koeverden carried the Canadian flag at the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics four years ago.
