Officials deactivate emergency plan day after telecommunications chaos

CALGARY – Emergency officials in Calgary have deactivated their municipal emergency plan, saying 911 service is functioning normally again.
Lines to many critical communication services, including 911, were interrupted or unavailable following a fire and explosion Wednesday at Shaw Communications headquarters.
No one was hurt when the blast in a 13th floor electrical room brought down Alberta Health Services computers, put three radio stations off the air and affected some banking services.
A backup generator was brought in to provide electricity to the building, but fire Chief Bruce Burrell has said the full scope of the damage can’t be assessed until power is fully restored.
Alberta Health Services warns patients can expect delays in services and postponements of certain surgeries, procedures and tests. For more information, you can call AHS’s information line at 1-866-301-2668.
The city says that Shaw is continuing to work with its phone and data customers to restore normal service.
