Thousands of vulnerable people in Calgary will soon have access to enhanced in-home services from the Community Kitchen Program.
Thanks to almost $500,000 in funding from the Government of Canada, a volunteer training program has been launched to develop and implement an initiative that will help recruit and train over a thousand volunteers.
Marilyn Gunn, the CEO and Founder of the Community Kitchen Program says this is a dream come true.
“We have the federal government, the provincial government, the city of calgary, the corporate world, the faith community and agencies all in this room. This is linking arms to take and meet the needs of needy Calgarians.” says Gunn.
Calgary-Nose Hill MLA Dr. Neil Brown, says he was approached about the idea a few years ago from Gunn.
“We’ve already seen the evidence of what some of these programs have done in the past. It’s a tremendous collaboration and it shows what government can do when we act with the non-profit sector, and all of the chariatable groups that are involved in this project.” says Brown.
Brown notes despite what skeptics think of government and their involvement with these initiatives, he believes there’s a benefit to having a strong partnership with the private sector.
To match the government’s contribution, the organization will raise funding through new partnerships with the private sector and individual donors
