From giant Easter eggs to cryptic stone carvings, the hidden gems around Edmonton are surprising.
Hop in the car and drive to Edmonton and start the journey east on Yellowhead Highway to Vegreville.
Take a picture with the world’s largest Easter egg, a tribute to the area’s Ukrainian heritage. Continue east on Hwy 16 to Hwy 36, then south to Viking. Rent a bike or bring one and cycle out to the Ribstones to see the mysterious carved stones or visit the Viking Museum.
If there is time, take a trip to Wainwright and tour the local museum in a restored 1929 railway station.
From Viking, travel northeast on Hwy 14 through Kalyna Country. Pass through the villages of Holden and Ryley to Tofield. Birdwatchers can head to the Beaverhill Lake Nature centre in Tofield and check out over 270 species of birds.
On your way back to Calgary, relax in the waters of Cooking Lake.
