The eyes of the world are on Spruce Meadows this week as The Masters show jumping competition gets underway.
“The world has converged on Spruce Meadows, both the equine and the flags of the world with the athletes,” Spruce Meadows spokesman Ian Allison tells 660News. “We’re looking forward to having another memorable event at Spruce Meadows.”
The Diamond Jubilee edition of the competition will see thousands of people descend on the grounds south of the city for one of the most lucrative events on the annual equestrian calendar.
“We’ve welcomed athletes from 12 nations and the Spruce Meadows is in great shape right now,” Allison continues. “The sun is shining, the forecast is good, and we’re looking forward to five great days of championship sport.”
The tournament begins Wednesday, and Allison notes that this year’s competition will feature many athletes who graced the recent Summer Olympics in London.
“We have great representation from the medal podium in both team and individual athletes here, as well as the Spruce Meadows’ stars that the fans here in Calgary are so accustomed to seeing: Ian Miller, Eric Lamaze, Beezie Madden, Rich Fellers,” says Allison.
Thanks to the Olympics — and an optimistic weather forecast — huge crowds are expected for the 25th edition of The Masters.
