Former police chief remembered as a pioneer

A respected former Calgary police chief has passed away at the age of 81.

Brian Sawyer, also a former Victoria RCMP superintendent, was sworn in as chief in 1973 when Calgary had a population of 400,000 people.

Sawyer is credited with helping build communities by zoning the city, and bringing in crime prevention programs like Block Watch and Crime Stoppers.

He is also responsible for renaming the force the Calgary Police Service.

Inspector Paul Stacey tells The Calgary Sun he was the Peter Lougheed of the police service, and moved the force into the new age.

Sawyer retired in 1984.
