It has become the unofficial kickoff to the Calgary curling season.
For the past 35 years, the best female curlers in the world have spent Thanksgiving weekend at the Calgary Curling Club for the Autumn Gold Classic.
There’s a $54,000 prize purse this weekend and it’s a rare opportunity for fans of the roaring game.
This field of curlers, which this year includes Olympic bronze medallist Shannon Kleibrink and reigning silver medallist Cheryl Bernard, is as strong as you’ll find at any competition in the world.
What sets this a part from the Tournament of Hearts or the Olympic Games says spokesperson, Bernice Marek, is that you can take in the whole weekend for $25 and rub shoulders with some household names of the game in a club setting.
“Come on down to the Calgary Club. We have a day pass that’s $10 and a weekend pass that’s $25 and the draws are throughout the day and into the evening,” says Marek.
“Come down, have a drink, have a bite to eat, maybe get some autographs if you’re an autograph seeker.”
Draws run day and night through the weekend with the big money game on Monday.
