Eating fish during pregnancy may protect children from ADHD: Study

A new study shows eating fish during pregnancy may protect unborn babies from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but it depends on the type of fish being consumed.

Researchers with Boston University found that women with the highest levels of mercury were between 40 and 70 per cent more likely to have children showing symptoms of ADHD eight years later.

However, children born to women who ate more than two portions of fish per week were 60 per cent less likely to have symptoms of ADHD.

The researchers said there are questions surrounding whether the moms-to-be were eating fish that tends to be higher in heavy metal – such as swordfish, shark and marlin – compared to sardines or mackerel.
