Red Deer River oil spill cleaned up

Plains Midstream Canada says the 475,000 litres of light sour crude that spewed into the Red Deer river has been cleaned up.

This past June, the pipeline burst and crews have been mopping up the oil ever since.

In a news release Friday, the company says the clean up phase is “substantially complete” and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development has signed off on it.

“In early June, our main focus was on containment and clean-up. We developed access and clean-up plans to strategically direct our workforce, helping us receive interim closure from regulators for all impacted segments by mid-September. With interim closure granted, our long-term monitoring plan is now underway. Our crews have been demobilized but we’ll continue to oversee activities and will return to the area in spring or early summer 2013 to inspect the sites again to ensure restoration is progressing,” said Stephen Bart, Vice President, Crude Oil Operations.

The area near Sundre in Central Alberta will be re-inspected this spring.

While the company still has no cause of the leak, they say 2,911 barrels of oil spewed from the pipe.
