TORONTO, Ont. – The first mobile credit card payment in the country went toward a Tim Horton’s coffee Friday.
Rogers Communications and CIBC unveiled the first mobile credit card payment method in Canada.
Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield purchased a coffee at a Toronto Tim Horton’s by tapping his Rogers BlackBerry at a pay terminal, which processed the transaction with his CIBC credit card.
“It was a lot easier than even I think they anticipated and I anticipated,” he said.
“I’ll have my music, I’ll have my e-wallet and I’ll have my communication device all-in-one.”
Starting Nov. 16, CIBC’s new Mobile Payment App will be available to CIBC credit card customers using certain models of BlackBerry smartphones from Rogers. The service will be available on two BlackBerry models, the Bold 9900 and the Curve 8360.
Eventually, the mobile payment method will roll out to other smartphones, including Android and Windows 8.
The connection works using a NFC connection (for near field communication) that conveys the payment information between the pay terminal and the smartphone. The system, dubbed suretap by Rogers, converts a smartphone into a mobile wallet.
Users can make everyday purchases by holding their smartphone up to a contactless payment terminal, said David Robinson, vice-president of emerging business at Rogers.
“If the merchant accepts a contactless card, they’ll be able to accept this payment transaction,” he said.
CIBC senior executive vice-president and head of retail and business banking David Williamson said the system features four levels of security.
“The SIMS that we’re bringing out have the highest level of security known,” he said.
