Stampeders star under fire for Twitter comment

Stampeders star and veteran receiver Nik Lewis appears to have crossed a line in his latest attempt to be funny.
In a post Sunday on his Twitter account, Lewis wrote “I just bought OJ’s gloves on eBay. Now all I need is a white girl named Nicole.”
The tweet was completed with grammatically incorrect hashtag #MaybeALittleToFar.
His post was referencing a story from the National Enquirer about OJ Simpson trying to sell the knife that he allegedly used to kill Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.
Team officials were quick to deem the post inappropriate and it has since been removed.
“We don’t even have to get into the reasons why it’s inappropriate, it’s pretty obvious,” says Calgary Sun Sports Columnist and Jack FM morning show co-host Eric Francis. “You don’t joke about something like that and Nik Lewis, who has been wildly entertaining and a media darling for years, has crossed a line and when you cross a line you have to have your hand slapped.”
The tweet is the latest media mishap Coach John Hufnagel has been forced to deal with.
Lewis’ post came not long after comments from Quarterback Drew Tate who told reporters he couldn’t remember the first half of last weekend’s semi-final against Saskatchewan, suggesting he had a concussion.
“The team should be focused on their game; instead, poor John Hufnagel, who hates this stuff more than anything else, has to put out fires after fires after fires,” he says.
There’s no word yet on what kind of disciplinary action, if any, Lewis will be facing.
Francis believes the league will at least fine him for the comment.
“I don’t think the league will suspend him but the team should consider it,” he says. “But with all that’s on the line this weekend and he’s their best receiver, I can’t see it happening.”
Francis tells 660News Lewis was contacted late Tuesday night and still doesn’t understand what the furor is all about.
“That’s what makes it really sad,” he explains.
Sunday’s CFL Western Final will take place at 2:30 p.m. in B.C. against the Lions.
