US organizations sounding the alarm of XL foods takeover

The purchase of Alberta’s XL Foods by a Brazilian-based company is coming under fire south of the border.

JBS-USA is set to purchase XL Foods in a $100-million deal, including plants in Idaho and Nebraska, along with processing and feedlot operations in Canada.

A spokesperson for the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund says they are concerned the deal would make a foreign meat packer the largest in the United States, which would hurt competition levels.

According to The Calgary Herald, over 40 organizations have come together and written a letter to the U.S. government asking for an expanded investigation into the deal.
