Alberta Freedom Party calls for sovereignty

When it comes to confederation, it appears some Albertans want out.

The newly-formed Alberta Freedom Party is ready to declare our province a sovereign state.

Founder Jeff Rout first brought up the idea in certain circles as a joke, but found out the concept was nothing new in the province.

Rout says they’ve had a lot of good feedback since throwing the idea out there.

The party commissioned a survey in October of last year; they wanted to know if there was popular support.

Sixty per cent said they would support nationhood for Alberta.

“There’s always been actually, a strong feeling of independence in Alberta, but there’s also been a strong realization that we do not benefit in any way by being a part of Confederation,” Rout said.

He’s hoping they can achieve official party status within four months.
