CFIB wants nickel to stay

Talk of abolishing the nickel is not sitting well with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

The penny is being retired February 4th and a former Bank of Canada economist is suggesting the five cent coin should follow suit.

The CFIB’s Richard Truscott tells 660News any changes in currency like phasing out the penny or the introduction of new polymer bills costs small business.

“Whether it’s pricing or whether it’s accounting and tracking sales, all of these changes can cause a fair bit of disruption for entrepreneurs, for small business owners,” said Truscott.

A spokesman for Finance Canada says the government has no plans to eliminate the nickel.
